Help downloading applications in Vista please :-)

Aargh, I can't download applications all of a sudden.
Have all settings on medium and usual AVG version 8.
Any suggestions

Are you downloading them through a browser? Which one?

I am using IE 7.
I can't download some online games so I tried to see if it was an IE problem by downloading Firefox.
I can't download Firefox.
The downloads start off fine, then after about 100Mb the download box just disappears and the download stops.
If I save to a folder, you can see the file start to appear and then all of a sudden it disappears again. MSE GBBO 2015 - Go Alvin!0
