Help Connecting iMac To Wireless Network

  • Hi Marty,

I'm sure I've been using the correct password but I've also disabled security and tried it with no password and it still comes up with the same error message so I don't think it can be the password. When I was using the wrong password it simply said invalid password as well whereas since I've used the right one it's come up with this different error message.

This is one of the first screens that came up after he turned it on for the first time so the menu bars etc on the imac aren't there yet I don't think. Thanks.

    Regards

    Michelle

Oh, he's using the screen when he's setting it up. Skip past that bit until he gets to the desktop, and then try entering the details as I said above.

Ok I'll give that a go - I'm not sure how I can copy the key on my PC and paste it on the imac though hence why I've been entereing it manually each time and it takes forever! Thanks.

Don't you have an ethernet cable? You could just plug it into the iMac and then access the router's setup from there.

Or you could just use a shorter key. A password composed of 8 random alpha-numeric characters should provide ample protection for a home user. If someone wanted to get past that, it would be quicker (and easier) for them to break into your house.
  • No I don't think there are any ethernet cables around as I've only ever had adsl modems and then the wireless router which was previously connected to his old PC via a usb adapter.

I'll try changing the key too but I still think if it won't connect with security completely disabled that it's probably not that causing the problem.

My brother's gone to bed for work in the morning now so I'll give it another go in the morning by letting the set-up finish and trying to input it manually - thanks for all your help.

No problem, I hope you get it sorted.

I just suggested changing the key so you don't have to sit there for ages copying it out and typing it in, but that's up to you! ;)
