What to do?

I've just had my annual visit from my independent financial advisor and because I'm a bit of a dummy when it comes to Investment funds etc I tend to nod and shake my head when I think I should do when he explains things!
The bottom line which I did understand was that over the last 12 months my investment had reduced by around 8K to something like 40K. My investments have been 'spread' round on what he terms as medium to low risk. His advice is, it's up to me what to do, i.e. take it out and put it safe or leave it and ride it out. He didn't want to influence me too much but the impression I got was to ride it out. I wondered what the 'general' opinion was by other financial whizzes.
