  • please can you tell me how to go about actually buying shares.
do you need a broker or financial advisor (I know it would be strongly recommended by many) how did you go about finding one.
if not, how did you actually by the shares?
I'm new to investing here in the UK, but I'd really like to start. I have invested before in my home country but don't know how to do so here.

So how do you make money from shares???

    1 From the dividends

    2. By buying a share that goes up in price AND THEN SELL IT.

Too many people think 'it's gone up, I'll hang on to it' and land up selling at a loss when it's gone down again.

Can anyone answer this; if I know a big company is going to buy another company whose share price is currently low should I be buying now?

Unless you have inside information, and frankly often even if you were to have, then the the news is already most likely priced into the stock.

I have got inside info & the share price was still low at close of play yesterday, the buy-out news still hasn't been released.

Isn't that always the risk in these things??
Reliable source but they don't know anything about shares either so we don't know if we are doing right by buying them before the takeover.
Let's make this a pretend situation, as insider trading is illegal, but if you were to know that a company was about to be taken over and you knew what price was being paid for that company, ie per share price, you would have a better idea.

Whether a stock price is "low" or not is always a relative thing for most people, ie they consider it low because it was much higher last week, or last month or whatever, it rarely occurs to them that maybe when it was higher, it was too high, ie overvalued, and the "low" price it has now is where it should be.

Right well first off delete your post #16 as insider trading is illegal., and I'm afraid I wouldn't be prepared to discuss that company or anything related to buying or selling it's stock any further.
Word to the wise, insider information is not something to advertise.

That makes more sense! I know they are being taken over but I don't know the price per share! So probably best to leave my money where it is (i.e. ISA)??

Is it insider trading if you're not linked to either company in anyway? & if you only know they are being taken over?
Seriously is it illegal to use information you've innocently over heard??

A financial Advisor would be useful if you do not know anything about what you want to invest in, perhaps invaluable even. You will also require a broker, there are many online brokers
    Selftrade
    TD Waterhouse
    E-Trade
    Hargreaves Landsdown
    Interactive Brokers
to name a few, of the top of my head.
