Little Pickle's Plan for Perfection

I started with Robert Ullreys Couch to 5k podcasts (recommended by someone on here). Just stuck them on my iPod shuffle and went for it. At first it's 5 min walk + 60 sec jog + 90 sec walk + 60 sec jog + 90 sec walk for about 25 minutes 3 times a week. For goodnes sake if you do decide to go down the podcast route don't over do it - I hurt my knees because they weren't used to the pounding and had to take about 10 days off. The podcasts slowly gets your body used to exercise. Pah - don't worry about looking daft - it's all in a good cause.
Week 2 cranks it up a bit (can't remember but something like 90 sec jog + 60 sec rest), but you don't move onto Week 2 until you're comfortable with Week 1 IYSWIM. Then Week 3 is a bit more running and a bit less walking and then on and on until Week 9.
When I could run a little bit (prob 5 mins without stopping) I joined a beginners running group (the local Womens Running Network had a taster course) and that really helped. Running with someone else makes you push ahead.
I usually go out by myself now every other day for between 4 and 5k usually just pavement pounding, but sometimes I take the dogs through the woodland footpaths (when it's not muddy). Because I'm a SAHM I'm free to go out during daylight hours, usually about 10ish after I've walked the dogs.
You'll need a pair of properly fitting trainers and a close fitting sports bra (please don't try running without one - you do yourself no end of mischief). Other than that just wear whatever is comfortable and take it slowly - your joints aren't used to it. Also I found eating a banana about a hour before setting off gives you a real boost of energy. Oh and don't run when it's too sunny 'cos you might overheat and strangely running in the rain is quite nice as it keeps you cool.
Can I just add that if I can do it (44 and still overweight even though I've lost lots) any one can. Good Luck to you LP :j:T:j
And on that note I'm going to bed. Nighty night
Here,Here !!!!
Definitely recommend couch to 5k its brill
Couldn't run for 60 sec when I first started !!!! But its the best thing I ever did - lost a dress size and have kept the weight off for 18m - its the first time I've ever managed it ( classic yo yo dieter b4)
Good luck !!!0 -
Aww guys, I am so touched by the responses over the weekend.
Had a very tearful Sunday. My H2B went away to the states on business Sunday afternoon (it's our first weekend that we've been an engaged couple) but needs must I guess.
So, I called my folks and they took me to the local pub.
I told them of my plan and I was obviously quite sad H2B was away, so dad said, right missy, if you're going to do this plan, you're going to do it properly.
Between me and him we finished my ciggies and mum and I drank chilled Rose until about 11pm.
I needed a bow out!
So, this morning I have woken, with no ciggies, and I'm sitting here at work thinking about my food and exercise plan for the next 2 weeks.
I'm off to start planning, and will post my rough plan here later.
Thanks again to all...
lots of love,
Little Miss Pickle

Bloody parents!
When your Dad said you're going to do it properly I thought he was going to volunteer to go out running with you, not smoke and drink you out of house and home.
Was thinking about you this morning (yeah - I know - I need to get out more
). I sometimes run on cycle tracks (Sustrans rather than the ones at the side of the road - obviously
) . In fact that was where I first started to practice jogging. I was out on my local one this morning. It's pan flat (having being an old railway line), it's away from traffic, but their are still lots of people around (for your safety), and the surface is softer on your knees than concrete pavements.
Awwww. Are you counting the sleeps until the future Mr LP comes home again?
Just wait until you've been married for 15 years and you'll be counting the sleeps until he goes away on business..............
You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.
Oi you lot - please

Last week was extremely tough.
I was ill, in the house alone as H2B was away on business.
I worked from home most days last week. I managed to do no exercise. Bad Pickle.
I did, disappointingly, smoke.
I managed to keep it down to roughly 4 per day and by Saturday I was kind of over smoking. I gave up Saturday afternoon and so far, so good.
I plan to go home tonight and having my first run or at least doing a keep fit DVD...

Stop Smoking
Only drink at weekends (and only a little).
Start exercising regularly.

I am sorry that the last week has been difficult LP, but I have quoted your first post, because you had only planned to start TODAY - not last week :T
So, last week was a 'practice' - you know what your triggers are now, you could resolve to have a better week than last week and start TODAY.
So LP -
what exercise could you plan to do today?
how might you get around your cigarette cravings today?
One day at a time, don't worry about the past, start afresh and today can be your first day 100% success :T

Hey, good for you LP!

Despite feeling rough and on your own
you've drastically reduced the fags :T That's more than enough for Week 1.
That's is a BIG step. It'll make your exercise easier too in the long run (if you'll excuse the bad pun). So none of this 'Bad Pickle' please
. Keeping to a routine is easier to stick to if you get used to doing one thing, then keep adding new challenges, rather than overloading yourself all at once.
So - Week 1, much reduced smoking in preparation for Week 2 when you'll introduce some gentle exercise and still keep off the weed
.
Triffic! All going in the right direction. :T :j :T

Fanks guys!
I actually meant to start on 22nd September!
oh well - just goes to show you how my lack of focus, tiredness, and lack of energy is affecting me!
I hope that reg. exercise and no smoking along with cutting back on the booze will make a difference...

I'm thinking about starting this podcast thing. But I only have an ipod shuffle so not sure how that would work... I knew I should have invested in the ipod touch

Nooooo - I've only ever had a shuffle (PW is deprived
). The weekly podcasts are about 30 minutes long. Just load on the week you'll be doing at the top of your playlist and switch to 'not shuffle mode'
and Bob's your uncle.

But how do I get it to the first thing on my playlist? Would it automaticly start there if it's on 'non shuffle mode' when I have first turned it on? Sorry, I've only ever really used it on shuffle
