Internship worries

Hey everyone!

So, I'm going into my 2nd year of university and have my placement year next year. I want to do an internship really badly, however it's starting to click with me that this might be a battle due to the *credit crunch*. Until now, it hasn't had a direct effect on me but considering so many people are being made redundant, the chances of people being taken on as interns must certainly be decreasing. I'm training to be a graphic designer/advertiser

I live in Northern Ireland, however in order to experience advertising on a broader spectrum it would be ideal to go to London or the USA...

I would get paid for the internship but I don't know how much and it worries me how I would be able to pay London rental, travel and living rates for example as well!

  • There will still be interns being taken on. It makes sense for the employers since they can pay you a bit less and, in general, you will work harder. Does your university not have contacts with industry? They should be able to help you find one you like.

I'm not sure on the rules regarding loans or anything though.
  • You should be fine. I have just started my placement year and my university told me that they have about 3 jobs for every student on an average year.

You will be paid less than a normal salary, and you will probably still have to pay tuition fees (I have to pay the reduced rate of £625 this year) but you will get paid. It all depends on the location and the type of work. I'm doing web design in Sheffield and I'm on £12K, whereas I know someone doing learning software design in Liverpool on £17K.

So its not all that bad! Apart from the 9-5!

I highly doubt you will get into the USA as it will be extremely hard for a visa.

Have a look on ratemyplacement.com - they have a few things on there, but i think its mainly for computing courses.
