Computer fan revving fast

Hi need some help/advice, my computer fan on my home pc seems to spin really fast when I have a few programmes running for short bursts & sounds like someone revving a car every few seconds? Everything else seems ok.

thanks

When was it last cleaned internally? i.e. the crap between the CPU heatsink vanes.

Vacuum cleaners create a lot of static electricity, which can be harmful to sensitive electronic components. Buy yourself a can of compressed air e.g. here

  • If you're going to use compressed air (which is the best thing to use) do yourself a favour and do it outside! It can create a hell of a mess. As a cheapskate I tend to use a bike pump but it's more awkward than a can.

It's also a good idea to gently brush the worst of it loose with a clean, soft paint brush before blowing it out of the case.

I've also used a vauum in the past but it can be risky due to static so only do that if you're prepared to risk trashing your PC.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • Can I not use a hairdryer to blow out all the dust?

I would just use a soft paintbrush as that will remove most of the dust.

Its also possible there is a problem with the heat sensor which is causing the fan controller to behave erratically.
  • Just ordered one from Maplin.

  • i have used loads of times hoovers in computers and never had anything go round. Tend to keep it plugged in (earthed) and then get the hoover to it (not touching anything)
