Student loans via uni and payments 4 rent etc

Hi all

im struggling to learn all about student finance.
I have a meeting soon with my uni finance officer which is great
But before hand i wanted to know as much as poss.

When i spoke to this guy on the phone he said i could get max funding as i am 27, living at home and have a part time job.
He said that i could geta loan to pay the course.
that i could get some sort of payment to pay 800 ( ish ) paid off the course fee ( is this what is called a bursary ?? )

He also said there is a maintenance fee ( i think he used that word ) that i can be paid to help pay for rent etc.
my question is. Lets say i do not take out a loan to pay for the course. i get the 800 knocked of the course prices then pay per year in cash or by debit card. will this effect how much maintenance money i get ?

does any 1 know at all how much maintence money we can get ?
any help and advice would be great !!!
Thanks !

Have you looked at these sites.. there is a calculator thingy that you enter your info in and it will give you a guideline on how much you'll get.

I'm a mature student (starting very soon! ) and 37 - so I was assessed as independent... if you live at home it may lower the loans/grants etc - I'm also in London so I get the max amounts
you don't include your part time job as income - income assessed is for people who have partners, family who are expected to help towards living costs - I'm not how you living at home will affect that.

There's the fee loan for the course, the maintenance loan (living expenses) and the government grant (the max is £2,850 - which you don't have to pay back),
Also each Uni gives out a bursary - mine's £300 - some Uni's give more if you are the first to study full time degree in your family (my brother beat me to it!) is that what the £800 is? I've not heard of people having money taken off the course fees myself.

Mine was straight forward (thankfully - just hope it gets paid when it's suppose to :o )

good luck - the finance guy should be able to answer your questions anyway... but read those sites - they have quite a lot of information - and try the calculator thingy.

    good luck
    :D
Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later date :o:D
now at Uni as a Mature student -update: now has a First Class BA!
  • thanks for your post !!
im going onto them sites now !!

so much to learn and i start on 6th october and i am 27 !!
  • Hi ,
From what i have read in your post you should be assessed as an indipendant student as you will be over 25 when you start your course.
Also you are classed as indipendant if you have been financially supporting yourself for the past 3 years, regardless of age and if you live at home - this is what i did as i am only 21 so luckily have got more than most people my age. Just need proof such as P60's.
Also when you complete the PN1 make sure you tick the box that allows the loans company to share your info with the university. This way any institutional bursaries you are entitled to will be included in your payment schedule.
