Installing external UBS modem to desktop

Options
Hi Folk

I made the change recently from laptop to desktop. This is that my new (2nd user) desktop didnt have internal modem. ive purchased an external modem which came with a fax cd and instructions - but as its me thats installing it - instructions dont mean much.

1st - there are 4 poss ports on back of computer box which the modem could plud into - which do I choose as its the only thing not colour/idiot-coded.

2nd - do I insert the fax cd modem or not?

At one point it also asked for the area code Im in - is this my area code or to do with internet?

Thanks for any assistance (in simple terms as poss - without telling me to get someone in to sort it).

(Im able to send them note as have still use of my old laptop. Was about to go over the village bridge as its sooo slow but it may have just saved my bacon today).
Thanks again

The cable will connect to the one that says line.

Insert CD as it will in all probabillity have the drivers on for the modem

P.S If you cannot connect change where you insert the cable
dont forget to set up an ISP

Stick in your area code, It wont hurt.
  • Hi Mr Skint,
Just to make a couple of things ABC proof for me please,

[QUOTE=Mr Skint]The cable will connect to the one that says line.
So this means I can attempt at putting it in any of the 4 possible places?

Insert CD as it will in all probabillity have the drivers on for the modem
My modems called V9 or something but the options it came up with were more like 24000, 36000, 56000 (56 looks familiar as its the modem speed?)
I have inserted the cd (which has fax modem written on) but what it was saying didnt appear to refer to modems. Ill give it another shot.

P.S If you cannot connect change where you insert the cable
dont forget to set up an ISP

So - attempt at plugging it into another port - OK.
'dont forget to set up an ISP? Im lost again. I need my modem working before can re-connect to internet via Wanadooo cd (or am I missing something?)
    Thanks Mr Skint

If it's a USB device it doesn't matter which port it is plugged into.

    Do this first

Plug in Modem, does a hardware wizard appear if so insert CD so drivers can
    be found from that disk...

Once drivers are installed connect modem

Install the ISP disk i.e Wanadoo
  • Hi

Im wondering if its a prob with the modem as it doesnt light up/have any affect to the computer. (Just to check - one wire from the modem goees to base unit and the other to the telephone ??)

Ive inserted the cd to see what happens & it comes up with several options - manul/installing programs(which turn out to be Windos/flashgit etc) but doesnt seem very responsive re installing modem. Maybe it is dodgey. I had the option of an internal one when I bought it but as I was taking it home that day, thought it would be easier to have an external one.

    Thanks for being patient

    What about a power lead..........

Internal ones are easier, but you should be ok installing that one.

WHAT MAKE AND MODEL IS IT?
  • Mello mr Skint

Power lead? I did wonder where the modem got its power but assumed when its connected to the base, thats its supply....

it came with 2 cables - one which connects the modem to phone cable (its just like my laptop cable), the other is a silvery cable which I assume can only connect modem & computer due to one of the connectors.
It also came with the cd

Its Mentor V90 56k which I purchased from a computer fair in Darlington at the w/e. If it turns out its faulty, Ill call them tomorrow & get a replacement.

    Thanks

I've got one of those in the cupboard. It has a connector on each end; one connects to the PC, and supplies it with power, whilst the other should be connected to the telephone socket.

Note: the LED on top will only glow whilst the device is in use.

this is exactly like mine - jus a diff.make. It also looks like only has 1 cable - with an end that looks like goes into telephone extension..

If one end connects to comp - should other connect to either a.power cord b.phone cable?

I had another look incase misplaced any cables & did find a black cable which may/not relate to modem (Yes Im stupid at times). Its got a connection like the silver cable which can go into back of baseunit, but the other end is more for a telephone extension cable.

Thanks v much for your time Mr Skint.
