the main reason a lot of people get it, is because they get child tax credit at more than the basic rate.

to only get the basic rate, you would have a family income of over £55K, so that means anyone who earns less than that, should be entitled to the grant

  • Thanks Flea,

We have a joint income of less than that so we should be okay. Do you know if you can make a claim for it before you start receiving child tax credit?
  • no you can not claim it until you are getting CTC and you have up until the baby is three months to be claim it.
  • Thanks Alwaysonthego,

I will make sure that we have it ready to send off as soon as we have sorted out the CTC, anyone know how much it is cos I heard it was £800 from my mother but £500 from a friend? :-s
  • It is £500 :j

  • Well thats better then a kick in the teeth
  • They are giving u some wrong information above.
It's not if u earn less than £55k u will get it.

We had our first child last december I earn £16500 my wife earns £18000 so no where near the £55k mark and they said we were not eligible for it as we are earning too much.

This is correct you need to be getting CTC at the rate higher then the family element.

  • Here is the link.
If you don't qualify before bubs comes along you might well qualify after, once your tax credit award reflects the new addition to the family (as was the case for us).

  • We applied after the CTC had been set up we are getting around £21 a week which includes the family element at £545 and also the higher family element for the child being under 1 with is another £545 for the first year.

They said we did not meet the criteria and were not eligible.
