Cavity Wall Insulation

I have 2 questions:
1. which is better, fibre or foam? I understand it to be fibre but just want to check out others' opinions
2. Friends have told me that they either got a grant or free installation because they have a child who receives DLA. I had a look at the website for the Warm Front promotion which appears to only offer this service if the householder or spouse is in receipt of DLA. Does anybody know if this is because the rules have changed over recent years?
Thanks
Ellie

Had mine done last year and they used a fibre product. I had a grant via the local council and paid about £175 for installation, we are not in recipt of any benifits
Here's the web addy of the people who installed for us, there's a section on grants etc

Also had mine done in the spring. They used a fibre product and only cost £99 because of grants from local council and I'm not on benefits. Most local councils are trying to get people to save energy and will sub insulation work.
Give them a call.If ya want to get into it, ya got to get out of it.0 -
When we had our house done with fibre (it was a new build) i must confess i was pretty suspicious - how did we know the entire cavity was filled all the way up - how did we know there werent gaps in it. I got a surveyor in with a thing he poked through holes we drilled in the wall and the cavity fill people had to come back and do the job again. Im still not entirely convinced the whole cavity is filled. Particularly around and above doors and windows.
If I was doing a new build again i'd go for the foam blocks that you build into the cavity as the wall goes up.0 -
Thanks, I have been on to the Energy Effeciency people who have given me a referral. They told me that the grant covers 50% of the bill, roughly. Bit worried about what jonnyw says though.

There is not much difference between foam, mineral wool or bead in terms of thermal conductivity. In other words they all perform about the same.
