Just a quick question, when buying shares is instant payment required ie by debit card ???? or do they operate on a monthly billing system where they invoice you for trades in that month ???

Lots of brokers will offer real time buying of shares, I think most high street banks do it as well. Just check commisions etc, for the best deal.
If you go for the banks I think their policy, in general, is T+3 so accounts settled 3 days after trade taken place. However I still think you need the money in you account at point of trade0 -
Which broker is best for real time trading, halifax wont quote a price if it moves too fast.
Selftrade also are rubbish, they time out when busy . Are barclays any better or hargreaves, etc0 -
Must admit.. I have been trying to log into selftrade for the last 20 minutes......0

Since you specify "real time" trading, what type of trading do you want to do, ie over what time frame?Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

I just dont like being forced into taking a price because of poor service
Whats your opinion on hargreaves and barclays in general. I noticed hargreaves is offering some cashback to open an account so might give them another try - they handled b&b I think and barclays seemed professional though Ive not used them
Sorry, no opinion on Hargreaves or Barclays, they do not meet my needs so have no experience of them.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

One thing in Hargreaves Lansdown's favour - it is possible to trade in my HL account this morning, which is more than can be said for Selftrade. I had major admin problems when moving my ISA away from HL, and they are rather more expensive than ST, but on the whole I am inclined to move my ISA back to them.
No experience of Barclays but others have reported problems trading over the last few days. There's a Brokers board on TMF which has been fairly busy recently...0
