Picking Items from Dump Yards

Hi all,

Apologies in advance if I am writing this in the wrong thread... this is my first attempt at starting a thread!

I have a friend in High Wycombe who boasted about picking up things like a used laptop, fan heaters and portable CD players, in working condition, at a dump yard which he then used or resold.

On a seperate thread, an MSE'r mentioned picking up some skis which he sold on eBay!

I wanted to know: is this legal? Are these dump yards all over the country? Is there one in Birmingham?

I think some great free items could be found in these places but I have no idea on how to go about researching this. Help appreciated.

Unwise to start selling dud goods particularly electrical equipment which may have intermittent, and potentially life-threatening faults.

This is not really compatible with MSE. Try one of the scrounger sites like freecycle if you really want to risk this rag and bone man trading.
:o Keep trying.........................what else is there to do? :o
  • Exactly, there has to be a reason why the item was dumped instead of sold or given away. I just tried to give a walkman to my local charity shop, who said I' need to get a safety certificate for it before they could accept it, so if even they are like this, I think you should be careful or you'll end up being sued!! I don't know how legal it is to do what you're proposing anyway; isn't it trespassing doing that in dump yards; they're open, yes, but with the intended purpose of people LEAVING things, not rummaging and taking...

At the dump near us these items are all separated and no-one is allowed to even get them. Years ago people took what they wanted - now they have people there who do not let you take anything at all.

Its the same at the dump near me, they keep all electricals in a cage with someone sat outside, as they have to be put seperate, and there is normaly 5 or 6 workers on watching you dump things in the correct place.

I wouldn't have thought you would just be able to walk in and take what you want.

And I would have thought it would be a bit dangerous, as already said, you don't know what is wrong with the things that have been dumped especially now with Freecycle and E.bay to get rid off unwanted working items.

I live quite near High Wycombe and you wouldnt be able to get anything from the local dump even if you wanted to, it has loads of workers about and they dont let anything out of their sight, I once saw a brand new cat scratching post down there and I asked if I could have it, they said that I would have to come back a few days later and they would have worked out a price for it !!! got one from the pet shop in the end.

Hi Abdulawwwal - agree with other postings would not really use and def. not sell anything from a dump. Believe it not we used to have fun at our dump as children picking our way in and out and finding things that we thought were interesting but only in the way that children do, silly things like bits of wood to bang nails into - would not recommend for domestic use or def. not selling!
  • you are allowed to get stuff from the dump but you do have to pay for it, here in hants they are set up like outdoor shops, shipping container with all the vids/dvds etc. it is still cheap though although prob no better than buying from a charity shop. I have a lot of experience in this as when i was growing up my dad used to do this as a trade he was electically trained so used to fix everything that needed it (very good living) but there is no money in it anymore with ebay and freecycle.
People do throw pefectly working things out just because they upgraded etc or the fuse has blown! seen it too many times, have a dabble if you know what your doing otherwise stick to non electrical.
  • My local dump is run by a private company who recycle everything that goes in, even paint tins are sorted into colours and if there is any left in the bottom it is extracted and put in another container with paint of the same colour and type. I've seen stuff that's been dumped there turn up at the local auction house, either in boxes of bric-a-brac or as items of furniture. The rate payer no loger has to carry the bill for the waste produced and it helps keep a profitable business that employs at least 10 or twenty people! I believe some stuff even gets put on e-bay!

my dad was at the dump and there was a good set of glof clubs there. he asked if he could have them and the guy said no you cant do that. he got such a red neck for asking he just didnt want to see them going to wast as my little brother could have used them. so i wouldnt do it. its crap tho i think as they will now be sitting in a land fill someplace. i get so angry when i see good stuff geting thorwen away cos the oner cant be bothered to free cycle it. i think of all the people out there that could use the stuff. i dont agree with selling it on however.
i used to hate it when aunts and grans would come up to me at weddings pinch my cheeks and say "your next, your next". well they stoped that crap when i started to do the same to them at funerals:rotfl:
