Just one point. A big hard disk is NOT essential. In the early days - as much as 5 years ago - big hard disks didn't exist for the home user. I managed to create one home movie of about an hour on a disk of only 4 Gb.
With Pinnacle (and possibly others) you can capture in Full or Preview mode. Preview mode is a "reduced quality" EDITING feature so this DOES NOT mean that your final movie is reduced quality because when you go to actually output your movie it re-captures in Full mode.
This is a great feature where disk space is at a premium.

I'd highly recommend the trial versions of both Ulead Video Studio and Adobe Premiere Elements, and discovering what suits you best.
I always preferred Sonic Foundry's (now owned by Sony) Vegas to any Adobe solution though.0
