First grown up job interview, help!

I've had interviews for part time retail jobs before, but now I have my first grown up one for a full time job! It's for Black Horse Finance as a trainee accounts manager. It sounds really cool and I want it. The woman who phoned me said I sounded nice and she thought I'd be good at it as apparently I have a good telephone manner.

So, anyway, what do I wear?! I'm thinking a black skirt, black tights and black shoes, but I don't know what top to wear. Has anyone got any other good tips?

It's tomorrow, so I haven't got much time to prepare.

  • I'd go for a nice crisp white blouse if you have one maybe with a jacket as well. If you wear a dark top as well i would lighten the look by wearing flesh coloured tights. Best of luck, hope you get it! P.S. don't forget to make sure shoes are nice and polished.

If you do a search for interviews you'll find that my personal preference is NOT to wear all black with a crisp white blouse because chances are so will all the other interviewees AND all the lady interviewers! But there is absolutely nothing wrong with that: it's just that I prefer to be remembered, and from the other side of the desk if you have seen 5 ladies in black it can be hard to unmerge them in your mind ...

I have a nice pink jacket - actually it's got a hole in it now so I'm not sure I would wear it to an interview again but then I'm not planning to get another job just yet - which gets me remembered. When I was job hunting, if I wore black trousers I didn't wear a black jacket and if I wore my black jacket I didn't wear black trousers. (I don't do skirts: if the job requires them then it's not for me!)

On the other hand, the interview is tomorrow and in finance, and they tend to be a bit conservative so unless you have anything equally smart then best of luck in your black stuff. Make sure your shoes are clean and SWITCH OFF YOUR MOBILE PHONE! I'd have spare tights in my handbag as well because when I did wear skirts I had a dreadful habit of gouging a hole in my tights at the worst possible moments!

Oh, and if you don't do blouses I'd say a thin polo or roll neck jumper would be fine, jacket is good if you have one. No midriff, please! I have no idea how much leg is OK in the modern office, but midriffs are out at interviews, IMO! Not too much bling, either, it's just a distraction, especially if it rattles or shakes. Forgive me if this is terribly obvious to you, I see all sorts in retail jobs and it wouldn't impress me for an office interview. But I'm probably very old-fashioned, I still think that if you're applying for a secretarial job you should be able to type AND spell!

I have a black shirt with pink stripes (like subtle pink pinstripe really) so I'll wear that. And I've found if I wear a corset top underneath it keeps my boobs under control! And it's a kneelength skirt, so that should be OK legwise.

That sounds great - definitely more memorable than plain black but still discreet, and pink is such a lucky colour!

    Hope you got the job!

When I went for my Abbey interview I went with the colours the wrong way round - black shirt white tie white trousers.

Sure they thought I was off my trolley but clearly got me remembered as I got the job!

    :) Woo :)
