Nationwide, are my savings safe?

All of my savings are with Nationwide, I am a bit concerned but my husband told me they should be all right as it is a building society. Should I trust him? We have got a bit of savings between the four of us and the adult children are looking to buy a house, therefore we do not really want to move the money. Thanks

As long as you have no more than £35000 in your name or £70,000 in joint names you will be OK.

Everyone recommends moving any money above £35000 from any bank or building society. It's difficult though when you have above this figure in Nationwide's 1 year fixed ISA bond.

I don't know wether you should trust your husband or not. Does he often go out and not say where he is ? Does he receive a lot of texts but keeps his phone hidden ?

I would have thought nationwide was a pretty safe bet, they have just bought/taken over the derbyshire building society (because derbyshire were struggling) but these days I guess anyone can "go bust" so would only have the £35000 in each bank/building society just in case

I think The Nationwide are very safe I have 115k in there tied up for another 6 months and I am not concerned at all, they are as safe as houses (doh!), only joking I will probbaly move my money when the bond matures in 6 momths as long as I find a better place to put it (better rates I mean).

The Nationwide is in a better position that many - no need to panic. As the previous posters said, if it's under £35k then no wory. If it's over then you may want to think about options for spreading it around. Northern Rock is a pretty secure option these days :D

Including HSBC, Northern Rock and NSandI, I'd have no qualms leaving more than 35K in Nationwide

Does that mean you're now guaranteed only up to 35K in Nationwide and Derby combined?
Sorry my posts so long - not time write shorter ones.
