Oak Wood Flooring - Suppliers and Alternatives

We have just purchased 105 sq m of oak flooring, 120mm X 18mm. We got it from Howdens and with our trade account (I'll not say how much we paid as it might cause offence...!)
However, the point is, if you know someone who has a Howdens account, go there. Their flooring is called Timberjack, comes in random lenghts and is very good grade - ie not many knots.
It was retailing at £25sqm but trade discount can vary so probably a better deal there if your contact has good relationship with them.
It's also tongue and groove and is going down on the self adhesive matting which eliminates much of the movement.
Good luck which ever way you go.0 -
Hi how did you (or anyone reading this that may have used the matting) get on with the self adhesive matting ?
I can see the principle behind the matting and how it works but I am not convinced that the tongue and groove boards can be fitted 'tight' into one another without touching the glue on the mat and 'sticking' before you are able to fix the boards together?
any help wpold be appreciated...0 -
Hi I live in Romford and i bought some really good quality flooring locally from romfordflooring.co.uk
I think their official site is allfloors-direct.co.uk
If you live in Romford or Eastend of london like i do, then it may be worth contacting them. If i'm spending allot of money on quality flooring, then I rather buy locally from someone that i know will be their if things go wrong.
I think allot of people forget that most internet companies are on the other side of the country or may get it wrong. Then your in for a world of trouble. I bought glasses from specspec/
That was a nightmare. They got the order wrong and had to go backwards and forwards with them for 6months. Complete nightmare for £100 glasses.
When i bought my flooring from them in romford, I did a bit of research. Figured out what i wanted and just turned up and asked them what kind of flooring i wanted. Looked at the samples they had. Then decided to go with a different colour. I took my wife allot she makes most of the colour decisions. Then we got down to negotiating on price.
I was having the floor laid, plus underlay, breading, skirting. So i had to look at the total cost of the job. The guy gave me a good discount because i was having flooring laid in more than one room. Always ask for a discount and have a kind of price your willing to pay for that kind of floor in your mind.
Generally the price works out ok considering the overall cost of the job. I know they will be able to follow through with the job and i was able to go back to them if things went wrong.
Plus I recently bought some tracksuit bottoms from sportsdirect website and they where delivered today. sports direct managed to mess up the order.- They sent me a British Tea Mug instead of clothing item.
- The order is 2 items short
- The tracksuit bottoms they sent me are not as stated on the website page. I wanted zipped bottoms so i selected tracksuit bottoms with zipped pockets in the description. None of the bottoms had zipped side pockets.
I was looking on SportsDirect Website and they don't have a Contact number. I had a feeling not to trust a man like mike Ashly. Its just asking for trouble trusting a shifty business man like him.
What can i do? what is the law about this issue0 -
We've just had a "Tuscan" oak floor laid.
Its a click and loc system which can be laid as a floating floor and is made up of individual boards that look just like real floor boards when laid, texture and everything.
They are quite solid boards and there are 4 different lengths of board in the box which when laid look fabulous.
We mixed all the boxes up as the boxes all had different shades in them, which when laid looked very natural.
I absolutely love it,was more expensive than the engineered wood floors we have in the other rooms but will not mark so easily and looks like it will last for a long time.
Over time I intend to pull the other wood floors up and lay this as it looks so good.0 -

Is this "Tuscan International" flooring? I thought that was real wood, no? How wide are the boards? I'm looking to lay some engineered wood in my tiny basement flat but am wary about laying real wood because of the effect of higher moisture levels/damp.0 -
This is a 'zombie thread' but an alternative is parquet. You can sometimes buy used parquet on ebay for a song. I lifted parquet from my sitting room. I was having heating pipes laid in the screed and needed access to the floor afterwards just in case, so goodbye parquet. I am sure lots of people do similar. Mine is finger style, so a pain to relay. But with a sander, and a varnish, it would look nice. A colleague bought some from ebay and laid it himself. Apparently it looks nice.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0
