Turning off "Mail" on my ibook

I have just inherited my son's ibook after years with a pc. I use gmail for my email but when clicking on an "email me" link in a website Apple's Mail launches itself. How do I stop this?

Because Mail is the default app for handling emails (You can change this within Mail or Safari). You could configure Mail with your GMail account, and then it'd be more useful.
You need to have a default application to act when you click an email link. I assume you are using GMail through a browser, so you could change it to be handled by Safari, but I can't see the point.
Works exactly like on a PC, the e-mail links are set to to handled by a default application, be it Outlook, Outlook Express etc.0 -

As isofa says, you'd be much better of configuring Mail to work with Gmail. You'll wonder how you've coped all these years using your browser to check your email.
