First time renting

Hello all, :)

I’m after some advice. I’m 19 and my partner and I are currently looking for rented accommodation around the Tunbridge Well area. We were originally looking to buy but have decided it may be a better option to rent for the next few years (struggling with a deposit!).

We are obviously young and inexperienced so I’m always on the site educating myself of the process of buying and renting etc.

We have been looking on sites such as findaproperty.com and have seen some great places. My question is, when it says, for example, £550 pcm, what other costs should we expect to be paying? Are there any hidden costs we would not know about?

Thanks so much for any advice!

The £550pcm will just be for the rent so you will have to add in all the utility bills, council tax, contents insurance, TV licence, internet, groceries etc.

£550pcm would be the basic rent due.

If renting from a LA, then an additional 'admin' charge may be payable. This would cover the work the LA does in preparing the necessary papers, getting references about you, credit checks etc. Details of the costs and what exactly they cover should be provided up front to any enquirer.

Also be aware that as well as the rent, you'll need a security deposit typically equal to 4-6 weeks rent. This is normally specified in any advert for a specific property and would be refundable at the end of the tenancy (less any deductions for delapidations)

On an ongoing basis, you'll typically need to pay for utility bills i.e gas, electric, water (if metered), telephone etc.

The other biggy is council tax which you will be responsible for.

There is a great thread about renting , what you need to know and what to expect from landlords , on this thread.Well worth reading:beer:
