Problem with Barclays

Hi Everyone, I'm having a problem.

Basically on the 28th August I put £47.02 worth of petrol in the car at Asda's automated pumps. I was unable to get a receipt but thought nothing of it. anyway, yesterday I got a letter from Barclays saying I was overdrawn. I had a look on my online banking and saw that the above mentioned transaction had been put through on the 15th September.

I have spoken to the bank and they say that a company is only allowed to take money from my account upto 7 days after I have inserted my pin - is this correct?

and also I went to ASDA and they are dealing with it as it was a known problem and I was told that in the recent cases ASDA havent been giving refunds as it is up to the customer to monitor their bank account - which to me is all fine and good but when they dont even take the amount off of my live balance how am I supposed to monitor this.

do you think I stand any chance of getting my money back - It's not like i'm after free petrol, I just want my account in the black again.

So are you saying that you are overdrawn because you withdrew the money that you should have left there to cover the petrol? If so, you haven't got a leg to stand on.

I have never heard the rule that a transaction has to be debited within 7 days of your PIN being entered, I suspect that this is complete and utter rubbish. Whilst most do get debited pretty quickly, there are some that take longer and you need to check your account to make sure, not assume that it must have gone out and spend the money!

I think that you stand no chance whatsoever of getting your money back

You could try writing to your bank, as opposed to pursuing ASDA. If you rarely go into unauth O/D then they may cancel it as a good will gesture.

  • why would you get the £47.02 back unless they charged you twice - you have just paid for the petrol that you put in your car?

    No.

Asda are known to be a problem however. There is a post on another forum about someone having £300 taken in one go for about 3 months worth of fuel.

Just avoid getting fuel at Asda in future, or keep a log of your transactions.

It isn't up to Asda to manage your finances - that's your job.

I've just had a car park payment taken 5 months after I parked the car there - it's just one of those things.

Just to make you aware the authorisations remain on your account for 7 working days, however they money can be taken at any time. This is because the merchant is responsible for when they take the funds from your account. You must be aware of when you complete a transaction to watch it leave your statement.

    Hope that helps.
