Fluctuating CPU

Hiya
I wonder if anyone could help me. Every few minutes my computer goes on a complete go slow. When i'm typing nothing registers and the mouse starts to freeze. I don't know much about computers but I do know that the CPU level is fluctuating wildly so something must be going on in the background. I've run avast and nothing is coming up on that. It's starting to drive me mad as it's getting worse. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance
xx

  • What are the specs of your computer?
  • press ctrl - alt - delete and look at what processes are running and what jumps when this happens. Might give you an idea of the problem.

Have you scanned for malware, spyware, viruses ect? Theres a sticky at top of the board with recommended free software to use if you dont have them already.

    Download CCLEANER
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
May as well run the cleaning part (Top left)
Then goto TOOLs and START UP
And list eveything that starts up with your computer

Thanks - i'll try all of this. I have pressed control, alt, delete but I'm ashamed to say I haven't a clue what half of the stuff is that's running! Think it's time to take my head out of the sand and learn. Thanks again.

I know that my husband defragged the drives last month because he showed me how to do it. Should I do that again?
  • Really you need to sort out the cpu problem first.

Not likely to improve matters. You need to find out exactly what processes are using your CPU.

  • It would probably be a good idea to take off all the rubbish installed along the way (spyware / virii / cc cleaner etc), and think about sticking in some more memory :)
