'Barclays online banking' scam

Options
Recieved an email this morning from Barclays IBank asking me to confirm my personal details for online banking. This was obviously a scam so I rang Barclays Bank (proper) to warn them about this. I was told to delete the email & forget about it. I was insistent that someone should be taking some action to warn other customers & insisted that they took some details which they did very reluctantly. Glad I don't bank with them. Anyway you have been warned!

  • sometimes some banks put little notes on their IB website warning they are aware of a scam...maybe they already have one. Would be useful if they did mail their own customers every now and again and tell them NOT to give any info out like that.

they prob have it all covered in the t+c that if you do give it out its your loss so they aren't too bothered.
    Sense is not common.

Yeah, I've forwarded scam emails to the 'security' of various online banks before, with full header information, and all I've ever received back are formfed replies telling me to ignore the scam messages. I have no idea if they take action on these or not.

Heaps of these around, and not just Barclays either. I think they'd be just adding to the general email noise if they started alerting customers with email accounts, and then you'd have the problem of distinguishing between real and fake messages.

Best bet is to just delete anything from any bank/b-soc asking for information/verification or pointing you at a different web address.

That has been my experience too unfortunately. I wish I could stop spam as I have just started getting endless emails from dodgy pharmceutical companies with lewd offerings...... Is there really nothing that can be done

I got one from '...@fbi.gov' yesterday alleging my IP address had been logged 'visiting 'illegal websites' and asking me to click on an attached .zip file.

    Yeah, right.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yep, I got that one - and the Barclays ones - this week.

I can't help but agree with some of the posts - there's no point in banks responding to each customer's individual report of a scam e-mail with an e-mail to all customers, as they'd be e-mailing customers every week and, unfortunately, contributing to the problem as the more genuine bank e-mails there are, the harder it is for the ignorant to spot the scam ones.

As it is, most banks very rarely e-mail their customers in my experience - Egg e-mail me monthly to tell me when my card statement is online; A&L e-mail me monthly to tell me when my current account statement is online. All my other cards/savings accounts don't e-mail at all.
