  • LONDON (Reuters) - Lloyds TSB's (LLOY.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) takeover of UK rival HBOS (HBOS.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) was not a shotgun marriage or a government brokered rescue of its rival, and the banks have been in talks for several weeks, Lloyds' chief executive said.

The government would allow the deal as financial stability "must trump" competition fears, the chancellor said.
Alistair Darling added that without the deal the outlook was "very bleak indeed", though he denied the authorities had rushed through the deal.
"We were onto their (HBOS's) problem for several weeks. It didn't just suddenly happen," he told the BBC.

  • What will happen to all those thousands of people who have had their court cases stayed over bank charges with HBOS, will they still be paid out if the courts decide in the favour of the T.S. now that Lloyds own them.?????
  • Closing Price 237.50
