Central Heating Thermostat not doing anything

We haven't quite figured out what is going on with the Central Heating in our new house yet. We have a Potterton Combi boiler and have downloaded the manuals - although they seem a bit incomplete as there is a timer on the boiler and the instructions just mention that this exists on some models but not how it works.
It seems that no matter what we do the Central Heating is always on during the times that are selected on the timer. We switch the thermostat right down - the heating is always on. We switch the boiler to hot water only and the heating is always on!
I've left messages for lots of local independant Corgi registered Gas engineers (we want the boiler to have a general service and someone to look at our gas hob too) from the Yellow pages but had no replies. I've done this 3 or 4 times over the last few months but never got to speak to anyone or had anyone call me back so don't know how you get a boiler serviced around here!!
In the meantime we've just set the timer to come on for short intervals in the morning and evening.

We think the thermostat is probably not connected properly (but there are probably other issues too), how are these connected to the system? OH thinks he has traced the wires.

we still have an old thermostat on the wall from previous boiler, new combi just runs off it's own timer and we use TRV's on all the radiators instead so did wonder if it was just the thermo wasn't connected. The fcat that you switch to water only and it still is on suggests something with the boiler rather than any thermos anywhere
  • If there is a timer on the boiler itself, you could sort out the controller (rather than the thermostat) in slow time. It might be worth contacting Potterton to see if they can help to start with, bearing in you've just moved in, there were no manuals left behind and those online seem incomplete. Just to be able to find out if your combi itself has got a timer (and where it is/what it looks like) would be a start. Here's the link:
