Which Laptop?

I've been given an option of two laptops.

Samsung R60

Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 (2.0Ghz) processor. 3Gb RAM. 320Gb hard drive. 15.4in WXGA superbright gloss display. DVD supermulti dual layer. Intel GMA X4500 DVMT graphics. Wi Fi b/g. Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium. 3-in-1 card slot reader. 3x USB ports. 6 cell Li-ion battery. Stylish piano black glossy lid. Integrated 1.3Mp webcam.

Toshiba A300

Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 (2.0Ghz) processor. 3Gb DDR2 RAM. 250Gb hard drive. 15.4in widescreen XGA CSV display. DVD supermulti dual layer. Intel GL965g graphics. Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium. Wi Fi a/b/g. 1.3Mp webcam and integrated microphone.

I'm aware both have Integrated Graphics, but as I'm using it for Office/Dreamweaver, the graphics should be fine. (I'm a college student)

Which one should I get?. The Samsung is £50 more expensive then the Toshiba.

From what you say it sounds as though the Toshiba will do everything you need it to do, so I would go with that if it's cheaper.

The only spec that will make much of a difference to you is the slightly larger HDD in the Samsung, but that's not worth paying £50 for, especially considering for that price you can get a 500 GB external HDD anyway.
  • probably the toshiba as an extra 70 gig you get with the samsung isn't worth £50, especially as it always best to keep stuff backed up on an external hardrive in case you damage your laptop and especially as text files are tiny in size. I'd get the toshiba and spend £50 on an external harddrive if i was you.

I've been thinking about this today and considering spending a little more and getting the Samsung Q45. It's around £750

    12.1'' WXGA Display
    3GB Ram
    350GB Hard Drive
Dedicated Nvidia Geforce 9200M GS 256Mb
    Wireless b/g. Bluetooth 2.0.
    Integrated 1.3Mp webcam.
    3-in-1 card reader.
    Extended 6 cell Li-ion battery.
    1.89kg

It's more aimed at business people (I'm a college student/Hopefully future Uni student), but at least it'll be nice and light to carry around.
  • seems like a big leap in price. the small size of it is what makes it lighter. you'll get a substantially smaller screen and I've found anyhting below 14" screens to be a bit more tiresome for your eyes, especially if you're using it for long periods of time. you are also paying substantially more as it has a 256mb dedicated graphics card and huge hard drive (to be fair that is a very big hard drive for a small laptop). if you are just using it for dreamweaver and office the intergrated graphics cards of the first 2 laptops mentioned are more than ideal. dedictaed graphics cards bump up the price and are only useful if you want to play games or run multiple graphics heavy programs (e.g. video editing, photoshop etc) as the dedicated card gives it more leeway before it starts stealing memory from your main ram.
if you're after a good graphics based laptop i suggest the acer aspire 5920g 256 dedicated graphics at £599 but its heavier than your new mentioned machine but has a bigger screen.
I've got to be honest and tell you that the Q45 seems extremely overpriced. An Acer 6920g with 512 dedicated graphics, 3 gig ram, blue ray drive, high def 16" screen and 250 gig hard drive for £699 or less!!! and its not too heavy either. i'm about to get one having tried it out. it is lovely to use, great screen but its the graphics i'm after as i edit videos and photos.

then again, its your money, just think you could probably get higher spec for £750 than on the Q45 but obviously they might be heavier and larger...but not that much!!!

  • The small screens are great. Especially since they are easily portable. If you plan on starring at the screen for hour on end doing Dreamweaver type work though you might want a bigger screen. Easier on the eyes. As for the 1st 2 I'd probably choose the Toshiba but more so as I have no experience with Samsung.
