Received Bill but have Meter - electricity

Hi all,
I have one of those ridiculous key meters. I'd like to get rid of it but I was told it would cost around £120. I have noticed my electricity getting more and more expensive and now I have just received a bill for £40.
This infuriates me as I thought that these companies were supposed to make sure the tariff was correct (and also because I think it's way over the odds already!).
Anyway - I vaguely remembered something about gas companies being taken to task for not changing people's gas meters when tariff's changed. I wondered if I have a similar recourse with the electricity board?
Also, if anyone knows of a way of getting rid of the meter without having to pay a silly amount of cash I'd be grateful. Current provider by the way is e-on.
I'm still trying to figure out how I use so much electricity anyway seeing as I live alone, have gas heating, rarely cook (I like salad or just cooking in bulk:o )and work 5 days out of 7
It used to be about £6-7 a week and is now around £13 taking into account this extra money they now want.
I'd appreciate any advice anyone has to offer xx
