Sounds like your lead at the back of your monitor may be loose, you may need a new lead or perhaps screen has just seen better days
I would try leads at the back of your monitor though
Happens all the time to one of my desktops 0 -
If that fails.... Could also be a dry solder joint ? Do you have it near anything magnetic ?0

Lead seems OK, and can't see anything magnetic nearby....can't believe how pale everything is! Think the laptop is still under guarantee under the "laptops for teachers" scheme, so may hjave to take it back to school...Resolution:

I did not realise it was a laptop, I presumed it was a desktop monitor.
I still stand by you may have passed it by something magnetic or eletrical, a possible dry solder joint inside, or more commonly perhaps a loose connector
Easily fixed, albeit fiddley - best not to fiddle if relatively new as could void warranty

pale or dark?0

Sorry folks \i gave up and went to bed! Tonight when \i powered it up the windows logo was brown, turquoise and dark blue...and then everything went really dark. \the photo \i have on my desktop was like a negative and \i just had to give up. Am now using old one which does have a powerlead issue - and the keyboard is a slightly different size, hence \i keep hitting wrong keys! Any solutions to my darkened screen? I did notice that when \i first put it on I sort of squeezed the lid and the screen changed to paler momentarily. \why do \i think this is terminal????
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions!Resolution:

It's probably not terminal, but may not be economically viable to fix.
If it's a laptop, try connecting an external monitor via the VGA connector on the back - most have one - and press the appropriate Fn key to turn enable the external output (often F4 or F6).
If the external monitor looks fine, the laptop display is on the way out, but it could live on. If it doesn't then the on-board graphics adaptor is probably shot - unlikely to be worth repairing.0
