Icons not showing in notification area of taskbar

In XP pro (with SP3) I have set the following programmes/utilities to start automatically at startup and to always show their icons in the notification area of the taskbar:
  • google desktop search
  • Mcafee security
  • O2 broadband assistant
  • Windows defender
  • Task manager (run minimised, shortcut in Start:All programs:Startup)
However, the icons for these do not all appear each time - the only one guaranteed to appear every time is McAfee security. However, the relevant programs do appear to have loaded even thought the icons are not shown. I do not use the option of hiding inactive icons.

Is there a quick and easy fix for this?
