Pay for graduation?

Does anyone else know of any universities where you have to pay to attend graduation?

I know it's true of UCL and wondered if anyone else had experienced this.

Thanks.

The student doesn't pay (I don't think - not at any uni I know of anyway) but anyone who goes to watch does at pretty much every uni as far as I know.

I'm not sure who you mean?

I didnt have to pay for graduation and got 2 free tickets for my guests.

BUT gowns cost about £50 to hire (which I HAD to do) and the photos cost me £100 (all the aunties wanted them, lol). Plus there was an extra ticket for my OH which was a tenner.

So it cost me about £160 to graduate....

Oh and then there was the £50 to get my hair done that morning, so lets say £210. Lol.

    Don't forget the shoes.
    The shoes are very important.
  • Haven't had to pay for the actual graduation, but the gowns can be quite expensive to hire, and the pictures can be a bit of a rip off.

Like most others have said, usually you only have to pay to hire the gown and then for photos. Most places you also get two free tickets then anyone else that wants to come has to pay for another ticket.

    Hmm, interesting.

I've just double checked and only the student is free at my uni. Guests pay £16.50 each!

As everyone else has pretty much said, the student themselves tend to be free but guests who wish to be in the audience at the graduation must pay. Also there is the charge for the gown, photographs etc etc I've had 3 graduations at 3 different universities and in each case the student is free but you must pay £40-£60 for gown hire and then around £15-£20 per seat for your guests (some uni give you 2 free tickets then pay for any extra guests, some unis allow children/babies in free etc etc).
  • Thanks for the info so far. I know that many places provide free graduation for the 'graduand' where guests have to pay, but some universities (including UCL, Edinburgh and other Scottish universities) the actual student has to pay to attend their own ceremony.

I wondered if any one knew of any other examples of this?
  • The charge of £50 - £100 for most people to see thier loved ones graduate isn't normally that bad.

Maybe for those in hardship their should be help
  • DD is graduate of Glasgow Uni. They have a £55 fee this year to graduate, whether you attend in person or "in absentia". This apparently only applies to a first graduation, when she (hopefully) gets her PhD i 2 years time she will not have to pay again. There was also a charge for gown hire, but no charge for 2 tickets for us to attend, and free drinks afterwards.
