Child Trust Fund-should I still save?

I am currently saving £40 a month (which I can afford) for each of my two children aged 4 and 2 into a Child Trust Fund (share based)with Nationwide.
Given the state of the economy should I carry on saving for them. Given they will have to wait till they're 18 to access the money is it still a good savings option?
