Please help with dog wetting

I have a 13 year old German Spitz dog who i love to pieces & is in great health. He has over the past 6 months started to wee by the patio doors. The carpet got that bad by the patio door that i have cut it away. The underlay underneath was soaked.
I have purchased a new carpet & am waiting to have it fitted. He has gone & done wee up this. I am sure he knows what he is doing, he even does it when the door is open for him to go in the garden to wee.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

The problem is, once they have done it once they do it again, and again etc... until the odour is COMPLETELY removed.
Cleaning with most cleaning agents makes it worse as they contain a chemical which smells of dog pee and encourages them to continue marking the area.
The area should be given a thorough clean with BIOLOGICAL Washing Powder in water (and nothing else).
Then you should go back to basics with toilet training for a week or 2 so he gets a refresher of what he's supposed to do.
Also, what do you do when he does this? How you react to the act can greatly affect the probability of a repeat performance.
If it remains to be a problem after doing all of the above then a trip to the vets may be in order to make sure the old chap doesn't have anything going on healthwise as a change in toileting habits can be a sign of ill health (even if he is aparently in great health to look at).
Good luck.0 -
He tends to do it in the morning either before i get up or after i go to work. If he does it before i go, i tell him he is a bad boy& point my finger at him but i would never hit him. At the end of the day he is still my baby. I just cant stand the smell. I will try cleaning the area with washing powder.0

He might must think just because he can see outside that he is outside. My youngest dog used to go into the verandah just outside the kitchen and would wee out there instead of asking to go outside. A few stern words and ignoring her whilst i was cleaning the mess up was enough for her to sense my disapproval and stop.
As the previous poster said though, you must use bioligical washing powder to clean any scent that he has left behind. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Make sure it is biological washing powder
Oh and if you don't SEE him do it, then you should not tell him off as he has no idea what you are telling him off for.
Alot of people think their dogs DO know what they are being told off for as they act "sheepish" or whatever, when in reality the sheepishness is a confused reaction to your own angry body language before you have even told them off!
You should calmly ignore him and clean up the mess with no fuss. Dogs pic up the tinyest little bits of body language so if you are annoyed when cleaning up the mess then pop him in another room or in the garden with a toy or something whilst you clean up.0 -
It will help if you spray the area with white or surgical spirit once you've washed it too.
A vet check is a really good idea too, as house training breaking down can be a sign of urinary tract infection. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0
