Advice on renting in London

Hi,

Would really appreciate some advice on renting in London.

Please could you give suggestions to the following questions?

1. Which areas would you recommend?

My wife is working from Heathrow and I'm looking for work in London, so we're looking for a flat somewhere close-ish to Heathrow, or at least that doesn't take too long to get there. Budget: as cheap as possible, but not somewhere too rough.

2. How long does it take to arrange a let?

Ideally we'd like to move around 7-14 December. (Living in Lincolnshire at the moment.) Would this be possible?

3. Could you recommend some websites that have lets on?

Thank you very much!

  • You could try Ealing, West London, and https://www.rightmove.co.uk for rental properties.

    hi,

typed you a huge reply and computer froze

anyway, look at how your wife wants to travel to work...tube or train, as the heathrow connect now stops at loads more stations

try west ealing, ealing, northfields, south ealing, hanwell, boston manor.

areas closer to tube stations are generally nicer than places close to train stations, but close to trains is cheaper than close to tube.

chiswick too is lovely, but much more expensive than ealing and surrounding area, and also she would have to change tube lines, so longer to work. but a bit closer to centre of london

    try https://www.loot.com

and hurry if you want to move in by then, and make sure that your references are already sorted, so that you don't have to wait to get them.

If I was you I'd avoid London, I've lived there for 6 yrs and recently moved to just outside London, the other side of Heathrow a little place called Langley.

If I was you I'd look at places such as Langley, Datchet, Colnbrooke, which are not in London so your council tax is cheaper, you get a much bigger property for your money yet the transpost links are just as good!
Treat others as you would like to be treated :A

Hounslow can be good value, and if you're near to the Piccadilly line then it's only a few stops to Heathrow (can be a bit noisy as you are under the flightpath).

Also, try looking at Slough and Uxbridge... both have good train links to London and bus services to Heathrow.
Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees!
  • https://www.findaproperty.co.uk is good for the area you're looking at.
We've lived in several places around there:
Hampton/Teddington/Twickenham areas are very nice, have buses to Heathrow and trains into London. Might be a bit pricier than you like.
Staines - not bad, close to Heathrow and train into London Waterloo, didn't find it much cheaper though.

You could easily arrange a place in the time you've got, most agents will do reference checks but these won't necessarily take more than a few days.

we live in the teddington/hampton area and it is very nice, but a bit pricy. you can get direct bus links to heathrow. but if you want somewhere cheaper you could try feltham and hounslow. both not the most fashionable but quite well equipped with decent shops and transport. try https://www.findaproperty.co.uk for all the renting listings.

but both are under the flight path.

you could also try uxbridge which is reasonably close to heathrow.

what about you? where do you have to work. that info can help you arrive at a suitable location.

sorry lemoncurd, i appear to be regurgitating a lot of your advice. i did not read the thread apart from the first message.
  • Value for money wise as well as nice location, I would suggest Boston Manor. Plenty of houses within 2 mins walk to the tube station.
  • Many thanks for all your advice, much appreciated

I would strongly advise you to check out some of the areas recommended yourself before making a decision. If you get any particular street addresses you are interested, you might be well advised to post them here before committing yourself. Getting a reasonably priced property may not be all it seems. Also, use an estate agent. I would definitely not risk a private landlord letting in the areas suggested.
