Lloyds TBS shares fell 15% today.
  • Pensions are a national problem due to an ageing population, any company scheme may need altering so nothing unique I guess.

Agreed - but trustees have new clout. The clout to block deals!
Arent the funds the same people who lent the stock out and failed to back the rights issue?

Stock lending is pretty much standard practice and has been for years. Nothing wrong with it - and it's not the reason for the collapse in HBOS share price.

  • Another thought ..... I wonder what proportion of the institutional investors are Scottish? Scottish Widows (although, owned by Lloyds!!!!). Standard Life. Scot Eq/Aegon (although Aegon is .... Dutch?) .....

    Anyway .......

Will the deep-rooted distrust/dislike of the English influence their voting?

    ;)

There is no "deep-rooted distrust/dislike of the English" and if there were I highly doubt that it would influence their voting in such a way. There are some concerns about headquarters or large bases being moved out of Scotland (hence even more job losses) but apart from that I don't think people have that much of an issue with it.
  • It was - just a little - tongue in cheek. After all, if HBOS is relocated to Threadneedle Street, the Scots can thank one of their own (GB) for orchestrating the consequential fall out

    ;)

  • Sorry, I'm just getting more and more annoyed with this "us and them" attitude that seems to be growing. Hearing Alex Salmond on the news yesterday made me want to hit him more than ever.

I have no issue with the Scot, like most English. However, it is presented in the media that a lot of Scots have issues with the English. Almost like having a chip on their shoulder. With the rubbish the media reports on nowadays that doesnt mean it actually is the case though and is probably a stereotype.

That said, Alex Salmond is a disgrace. He clearly does have an issue with the English and partly responsible for what appears to be an increase in anti-scottish feeling that is starting to occur. Although Brown and Darling dont help. The West Lothian question and lack of English parliament or body also a problem.

  • Not to derail the thread, just to follow on from Dunstonh's point. Most Scots do not have a problem with the English, the Scots generally have a problem with the media either portraying Scotland or Scottish people in a bad light, or the use of England when in reference to the UK.

King Alex I does have a problem with the English, however. The SNP won by ONE seat (now I think he has a majority of two) and he thinks he's going to get his independence dream. We voted for a change from Labour, not for independence.

Scotland actually contributes quite a lot to the UK economy and we do get quite a lot in return. But Northern Ireland get more than Scotland (and put in less) and I believe certain parts of northern England get more than their fair share too. Yes, Scottish students don't pay tuition fees, but that money comes out of the budget and so other projects have to go without or do with less money. The NHS may be seen as slightly better, but again, it comes out of the budget. Go to the Highlands or Islands and you'll see little in the way of amenities.

I do agree than Scottish MPs voting on purely English and Welsh issues is wrong. But then, I'd feel sorry for the Scottish MPs since they can't vote on purely Scottish issues and they would probably end up feeling a bit second class.

There, that's me done on the Scottish/England thing.
  • With HBOS trading at over 232p for most of the day, where does that leaves Lloyds bid?

Will be interesting to see what the price is when the offer is put to the vote ;)
