Martin wrote an article suggesting that as only £35,000 is guaranteed secure that anyone with more than this should divide savings up into four or five accounts around this amount each.

Norther Rock I believe currently enjoys full protection for it's deposits, though that can be withdrawn with a month or two notice (not sure on the exact notice period). So if you don't want to mess about with multiple accounts for a few quarters of a % then I think they have a 6% offering

Yes. The Bank of England and HM Treasury guarantee arrangements cover all deposits, regardless of the amount deposited, and apply to all existing and new accounts, as well as to further interest payments. The guarantee arrangements will remain in place during the period of temporary public ownership and, as previously confirmed by the Government, such arrangements would not be withdrawn without at least three months notice in any event

Apart from organisations already mentioned, I would have thought that the Nationwide was probbaly the safest alternative.

Any views on the Coventry who have more than £35k of mine? I think I'd still consider them one of the most soundly financed societies.
