Good choice going for Glasgow - but you should be able to do so much better than a travel lodge - (unless you manage a £10 room deal)

Check out Bewleys Hotel on Bath Street, right in the city centre, or the Victorian House Hotel just off Sauchiehall Street (a Quad room for £90 including breakfast! - if one en-suite is enough for 4 of you on a night out). I've no experience of actually staying in either of these places but they were they ones I looked at when a friend was looking to do the same thing last year (she ended up in Dublin instead in the end). I'm sure there are plenty of others too that are well above a Travel Lodge - especially once you ad breakfast.

Sure you'll have a great time. For the fancier shops check out Princes Square off Buchanan Street and the Merchant City area and the Italian Centre just along from George Square. (Not much moneysaving there though!)
  • Looking forward to it Frizz, even if you are heading to Glasgow :p

Edinburgh hospitality will come to you though, so be warned icon12.gif

  • If you want a good laugh while shopping, Glasgow is a fabulous place for street humour and friendliness.

Glasgow feels more like a city. While Edinburgh has definitely upped stakes in the homour department over the past few years, it still feels more like a town than a city. I find it extremely friendly too but in Edinburgh, if you ask directions, the folk will give it in a friendly manner whereas, in Glasgow, they often take you to where you want to be or will, at least, enlist the help of other passersby.

Take the advice offered by a previous poster and enjoy both.

Stay in Edinburgh if you want a town atmosphere where nothing's too far from anything else: you can easily walk form one end to the other so wherever you decide upon for a night out, you don't have far to go to your BB/Guest House or Hotel and the Gardens side of Prince's Street really is quite beautiful just now with it's Christmas Market stalls, fairground attractions and Ice Rink: smells too inviting.

Stay in Glasgow if you enjoy the city atmosphere although it's not like London city atmosphere: it's much, much friendlier. There's a Travellodge out at Moodiesburn (taxi about £8 or £10 into city) but be careful.

We stayed in this place a couple of years ago. Fortunately my grandson wasn't at the crawling stage because, when packing to go, I bent down to pick up something from beside the bed to find a sock left by soemone else and a tissue with a used condom inside. They were lying just in below the bed near to the side. My grandson would have had it in his mouth, as kiddies do at that stage, had he been crawling.

I did report it but didn't even recieve an apology. Would have pursued the matter except that personal matters forbid me the time to do so from then on.

I believe that the Holiday Inn at Ocean Terminal in Edinburgh is good but Glasgow has one right in the city center as far as I know.

Enjoy your stay wherever you choose and have a wonderful Christmas with every good wish for 2006.

As a Glasgow gal, I'm quite biased....Edinburgh is beautiful, losts interesting tourist spots and culture. But Glasgow also has great buildings, culture and shops!
I'd also recommend the Holiday Inn Express - perfect location.
Hi Catherine, which Holiday Inn Express would be handier/closer for shops and bars/restaurants, Riverside or Theatreland?
    Thanks

  • Hi,

Just thought I'd add, DO NOT get a taxi from the rank at Glasgow airport. They are a complete rip-off and will charge you anything between £20-30 to get to the city centre. They are all white cars with red taxi signs on top.

The bus service is really efficient and will drop you off in the centre (George Sq.) for about £2.50 each way I think.

Alternatively try a local mini-cab firm to pick you up at the airport (Yell.com). They will only charge about £13.
  • go for the holiday inn express in theatreland it`s in the middle of Glasgow West Nile Street,on no account go to the Buchanan Hotel, its the biggest dump I have ever been in dirty, old, shabby rooms £70+.

Glasgow airport is not in Glasgow so get an airport bus its only 20/30mins,you have made the best choice for shopping/restaurents/nightlife Edinburgh is not a patch on Glasgow for these things,as I hate to admit it, as I`m from Edinburgh.
