Computers are queer or is it AOL?

I spent two hours from 5pm today just trying to get on line with my AOL broadband. I am not a techie but I checked everything I could think of. In the end I had to 'phone AOL (not free anymore!). An Irish girl with a bored voice took me through a lot of checks but to no avail and then said it was a firewall problem that had affected my modem (which was working normally).
She told me to uninstall the modem and reinstall with the disc I got with it.
There had not been a disc with it. She's sending one in the post. I turned everything off and waited two hours and now, voila, it's working well, all normal. Would she not have known if their system was down/overloaded??
Another thing, I can stay with AOL but through Carphone Warehouse who will let me have a free laptop. Existing subscribers to AOL cannot have this deal through them but new customers can. I really deplore this kind of thing.

PS - Nothing against the Irish, my mothers was a lovely Irish lady but I don't like to hear that lovely accent with a miserable/disinterested voice.
