Booting Problem

Hi, I'm hoping that a really intelligent person can help me!

I currently use XP and everythings been fine up until a couple of days ago: my PC boots up to the normal desktop screen but the icons down the bottom won't load and it just seems to stop dead. After turning it off and on again a few times and retrying it now just goes to the "select account" screen and won't let me select anyone.

I've managed to get it into safe mode and backed up all my stuff. any idea what to do from here???? Please!!

My specs are: XP Home Version 2002, Service Pack 3, 2140 Intel 1.6Ghz 1.87gb RAM. Hard Drive: MAXTORSTM3250820AS.

  • Have you installed any new programs recently.

I had a similar problem, but managed to resolve it using add/remove programs in safe mode.

  • Only ITunes but that was a couple of days before it went mad. The last thing I did was play some stupid cowboy game which spent ages loading up but nothing was downloaded onto my computer. I've got Norton Security and Spybot but nothing was flagged up.

  • Tried that, didn't work I'm afraid.

Might be worth removing the cowboy game?

  • Nothing to remove, I checked and it was playing it online I guess but as far as I know nothing was loaded onto my PC.

  • I've tried a system restore back as far as it will go but no joy I'm afraid...

if system restore didn't work then you may have to re-install windows...or repair windows that way with the disc...long time since I had xp...stick in the disc and go to repair...
