Windfalls can occur when building societies demutualise or get taken over. A building society's owners are its customers. A&L demutualised years ago. Its then customers got the windfall. It is now a bank and its shareholders will be paid when it is taken over - and hardly a windfall as they will probably be paid much less than what they spent to buy their shares in the first place.0
