Help, guinea pig chewed my wires!!

Hi everyone,

Last night one of our guinea pigs chewed through OH's laptop cable  and it obviously now won't charge or power the laptop. Guinea pig chewed the plastic coating of the cable and some of the wires inside (can you tell I'm rubbish at this sort of technical stuff!?) Some of the inner wires are still intact and the fuse is still working apparently.

OH has a scewdriver and insulating tape at the ready and thinks that he can fix it , saving the £30 cost of a replacement (cable that is, not guinea pig!) Can anyone please tell me if this is something that can be easily fixed, and if so how, or would OH be best to give in and take a trip to PC World?

Thank you!

  • Which part of the Lap-top charger is it the 240volt bit or the wire past the transformer if its the latter just twist it together and tape it up-if its the 240v bit be more careful and cut the damaged bit out then join with connector block-Should be back as new,

Screwdriver and insulating tape sounds decidedly dodgy to me!

You might be better asking someone on the tekky forum?

If you do need a replacement I'd get it from somewhere other than pc world, or at least do a price check with someone like dabs.co.uk, as pc world can be very expensive for some sundries.

  • Thank you for your help.

It is the bit of the wire that is attached to the ac adapter and goes into the laptop. I'm so sorry that I am rubbish at explaining or knowing what the bits are! OH has tried to wrap the wires around each other again but to no avail although he says he will try again in a minute. Is a connecter block something I buy? Are they easy to get hold of? (again apologies!)

    Thank you so much

I know, he thinks he knows what he's doing but I think he just likes to pretend he's DIY king :rotfl:

Thanks for your advice, I think i'll start shopping around now judging by OH's current attempt at fixing it!!

Many years ago, a chap that I worked with was looking after a guinea pig for a friend who was on holiday. He told me that it almost chewed through the back leg of his sofa. When he sat on the sofa the back leg broke under the weight. I think that you have got off lightly if you just have to repair/replace a cable.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
