Is this the best desktop PC for under £300?

Hi All,

I am looking to upgrade my Lenovo desktop which is 3 years old now and am looking for a desktop PC that I can do a bit of gaming on.

I have done a bit of research and have found this Dell Inspiron 530 Q6600 2GB PC Base Unit for under £300. I reckon if I upgrade the ram to 4GB and stick in the ATI HD3850 graphics card and I will be sorted!

I may need a better PSU but I already have a Hiper 530W Black Type-R Modular PSU installed in my old desktop so i can stick this in the new one.

Can anyone see a better base unit for under 300 notes or do you think I should just go for it?

Thanks :money:

  • Go for it!

Its Dell, and as far as im aware it has 4 ram slots for easy upgrade (i have the 531, the 530 may be slightly different)

Its a basic ATX case so easy to add to, and they have a 300w psu, though the quad core may demand more, so it could be higher.
  • seems to be a better price even than dells own specials

I know I'm getting to be a bit of a stuck record on here, but your clearly comfortable tinkering around inside the case so why are you buying one off the shelf and then upgrading it?
Why not just build what you want in the first place?

Reason behind that is if I built the exact same model on dell's website it comes to over 450....where as I can get the box for £299 and the graphics card for £50-60 I will be saving a few bob.

Fair one. I just had a quick play on dabs and can come up with one just over £300 but thats using mid range compenents and without shopping around. If your willing to go for a few b grade items and grab some of the offers on maplins for example I'm sure you'd have a few more pennies towards a gucci graphics card :)

Dell changed the policy and have allowed other firms to sell theyre pc's eg pc world, tesco plus others

dell were known for the fact they only sold they're pc's via the internet
