My father-in-the-law bought a new pc and cant get a web page.
He opens a page and it says lycos at the top but the page is totally blank and you cant type in the address bar or the search bar.
I tried turning his firewall off and looking at his settings but i couldnt work it out.
Its Vista premium he's got.

Sounds odd that you can't type in the address bar. Maybe the browser installation is duff.
Start by testing whether the internet connection is working. I've got XP so you'll have to adjust these instructions for Vista.
Do a Ping from the DOS command prompt. In XP you do it like this:
Start, Run, then type in:
ping google.com
and press Enter
If it responds with 4 lines roughly similar to this then your internet connection is fine:

If it says "Request timed out" then you don't have an internet connection. Check with your ISP what the settings should be.
If the Ping looks ok then you could try a different browser in case your installation is faulty. You'll need to use a different machine to download either Firefox or Chrome, transfer it to his PC and install it. See if that works, if so your Internet Explorer is corrupt.0 -
Are you referring to a page that your father-in-law navigates to, i.e. types https://www.google.com, or are you referring to a page that opens when you open the browser?Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I phoned him and he says he can get on the internet in a roundabout way...not sure how but i guess this means his connection is ok.
Ive told him to try downloading Firefox and if that works fine then it must be IE thats the problem.0
