What would you pay a private tutor?

I am hoping to earn a bit of money by tutoring chemistry. However I don't know what to charge. I have a PhD and some teaching experience at 3rd level. The last time I tutored was in 1998 and I charge £15 a hour. I am thinking of charging £20 a hour but this may be outrageous as i'm not a qualified secondary school teacher. Does anyone pay for private tuition and what do they think is reasonable?
I'd appreciate any advice or information.

I have done private tuition, going rate is about £20 an hour for GCSE. If I was paying as a parent, though, I would want a qualified teacher with some exam marking experience for GCSE or A' Level. I'm a qualified teacher but I think the examinimg experience is just as important, if not more so - only my opinion, though.

£20 an hour seems fine - and there's bound to be a big demand for a chemistry tutor for A level , or single science GCSE! I would imagine they would be like gold dust. :D
  • I've tutored in Scotland and generally charged £20-£22 per hour - more if theres a fair bit of travel. There actually isn't that much work out there. Theres quite a few enquiries but they are looking to be paying about £12 an hour. Much less than £20 an hour and you're selling yourself short due to preperation and the years you've been studying chemistry.
  • I don't know about chemistry tuition, but I pay £14 an hour for French GCSE tuition for my son. I think £20 may be a bit steep for many parents, but I suppose it depends whereabouts you are.
