At home if it's just compressing or changing format I'll use picasa (http://picasa.google.com) in the first instance and GIMP, www.gimp.org if it needs anything more complex.

  • I always liked this... very lightweight, opens nearly any image file format: http://www.irfanview.com/
  • Just use the gimp (https://www.gimp.org) to resize it and save it at a lower quality. If you want to send it over the internet, try something like Picasa, Photobox or !!!!!!

Jpeg images are compressed. (if you zip them up you don't gain much).

Ifranview can save with lower quality which reduces the file size. note lower quality equals , er, lower quality. Kind of begs the question of why have a large image with lower quality. Why not a medium sized image with good quality?

What is the image to be used for ? Viewing on a screen, projecting, printing, etc

If you want to make the picture smaller to email there is a useful trick you can do in XP (probably Vista too but I've not tried it). It assumes you use Outlook or Outlook Express.

Right mouse click on the files(s). Select "Send To", then "Mail Recipient".
It will then ask if you want to shrink the photos. Say yes.
A mail message will open ready to send with the shrunken photos already attached.
You could even save the pictures at that point and not send the email.
