Does getting cash back from a store count as withdrawing cash?

Probably quite an easy one to answer. When you are at the checkout and you ask for cash back on your credit card, does it count as withdrawing cash? Had a quick look around on the forum and my credit card terms and conditions but i havent seen a mention of it. Can anyone help?

  • Tricky one - as the cashback is tied in with the purchase and it's one transaction.

So, the CC company either treats it as a normal purchase or as a cash withdrawal - but I'm not sure which it is. You'll know when your statement comes in!

Not really, you can't get supermarket till cashback on a credit card...only a debit card.

are u sure?? ive got cashback on my CC before in a supermarket...

but to the OP - no it counts as a 'purchase'. so no cash advance fees :D
  • The supermarket tills are 'supposed' to distinguish cashback requests between a debit card and credit card and is 'supposed' to reject one for a credit card.

If you have been successful great but it would not work for the vast majority of us.

    Have you ?

    Which credit card ?

Typically, a credit card does not offer cashback, so not sure how you have managed this.

A major chain supermarket such as Tesco, Asda, etc...or a corner shop mini-market whose owner was on the fiddle?...the latter of which I'm aware does sometimes work.
  • I've wondered this, too. I get 0% on purchases from my credit card (HSBC), so I use that whenever I go shopping. I get offered cashback about 10-20% of the time, I'd say. Morrisons and Sainsbury's seem particularly happy to offer it.

I always say no because I'm not sure whether it's classed as a purchase or a cash withdrawal. I asked the cashier once, but she didn't know.

Chuckley, are you completely sure that it's classed as a purchase? Can anybody else confirm this? I really don't want to mess-up the interest-free period on my credit card (I've still got about 6 months left).

Are you sure it would actually work? Perhaps the cashier is just asking without any idea whether they can give it or not.

I agree. At J Sainsbury, on the cashier screen it would flash up with a prompt, something like "OFFER CASHBACK.... YES/NO?". But only did this with a debit card. I did ask people if they wanted cashback even when the screen didn't prompt me because I was on 'autopilot'. It was not possible to process cashback through the till unless it was a debit card and you had that prompt showing. Don't know what if helps. Cashier may have been on autopilot I would say.
