Best option for calling uk from Mexico

Hi,

First post on the site, I am glad i found here.

I was just wanting to get some advice. My fiance is off to mexico next week for her brothers wedding. She will be away two weeks.

We just wanted to know best way to keep in touch as I won't be going, saving up for marriage next year.

She is currently on T-mobile and we just weren't sure best way to do it. Seen a couple of options but haven't as yet had time to go throught them all. I was hoping you good people could shed some light.

Many thanks for your help
Mark

In your situation I would probably do the following:

    1. Get her mobile unlocked
    2. Tell her to buy a Mexican SIM card when she arrives - make sure it gives free incoming calls.
    3. Open an account with http://www.poivy.com/en/index.html and register her mobile on it - you can then call her on her Mexican number for 6p/min and she can call you on a UK mobile for 5.6p/min. She can make calls from her mobile by calling the Mexican access number (and paying the standard tariff for a local call in Mexico) then dialling your number. You can call her either in the same way (but using the UK access number - if you have registered your number with the service), or you can call from your PC or use the Phone-to-phone option.

You could call her at her hotel (or wherever she is staying) using one of the low-cost call providers.

    What about skype?

Better still don't phone each other too much. I was out of touch with my OH for 3 months when I was in Madagascar in the early days of our relationship.

Don't use the mobile I have to stupidly cough up £150 for the phone calls to my parents etc from Mexico whilst on holiday. There are phone cards you can buy when you get there apparently but I went down the could not be bothered whilst I had my mobile route. Never again!
No Matter what you do there will be critics.
  • Many thanks for the replies, very helpful.

Can the phone cards be bought easily enough, in most of the shops?

Will look into calling the hotel using one of the low cost providers.

Thanks again for the help, its appreciated
