  • Ah, just tel him that cave men would eat raw meat off a rotten carcass and suck raw marrow from the bones and he should be glad man invented fire so he can have his meat cooked to perfection and made easier to digest.

My OH is very moany about food, so when he complains, I silently pick up my most recent bank statement and show him that its minus £2000, and he just eats the food. I mean, what can he say?

  • I know that this is a very old thread, but on the offchance someone is still subscribed to it, I'll put my oar in. You need a lot less liquid in a slow cooker than most books make you think, and like someone already said, most things will cook in 6-8 hours and may fall apart over that. (Poultry even less). If you think you need to cover the meat with liquid, you'll end up with a watery result. I can't usually even see the liquid when I start cooking - veggies at the bottom, meat on top of that and maybe a mug of stock or beer or boiling water at most. By the end of cooking, the liquid is up almost over the meat.

The time thing I think goes back to old slow cookers which were set at a lower temp - modern ones cook slightly hotter because of concerns about making sure it reaches a high enough temp to be completely safe. So some recipes may well be saying a longer cook time than needed. If you are out all day you can use a timer to start it off so long as it isn't leaving the food long enough to go off if the time you will be out is too long.

I wish I'd seen this thread back when it started, all this time I've been thinking I was some kind of freak because everyone else seems to love their SCs

I wouldn't be so picky that I wouldn't eat the food, but I really don't like it at all, the only thing I like cooked in it is soup, everything else tastes just like ready meals/institution food, & don't even get me started on the vileness that is a whole chicken done in it!!! _pale_

I've just given mine away & good riddance to it :p

PS I know about the less liquid thing etc & I've always been a good 'from scratch' cook, so I do know what proper food should be like ;)

We do get this posts complaining time to time aboout faddy eaters and the majority of the time it's men. What is it with men:confused: or is it just cos they got away with being faddy as little boys. My own little boy is 100% better these days so hopefully I should never find a future DIL complaining about his fussiness over food:p

I have been amazed by this myself - never in my life have I encountered grown adults saying "I dont like this, I don't like that" - it's just pathetic and childish and any of my friends and family would be ashamed to act like it.

having said that I canno bear mushrooms :rotfl: but that's my only thing!

that's my oldest son's pet hate, I blame my Granny :p she hated them & I think she poisoned him against them :D

I was cruel & evil, my kids were each allowed 2 taboo foods that they absolutely wouldn't eat, everything else they had to give a try or they did without till the next meal, they never starved ;)

like you can't imagine any adult making a fuss about loads of foods  unless allergic ... although I don't care for SC'd food, I wouldn't refuse to eat it, especially if someone else served it to me

Tell him to do his own cooking or suggest he cooks for a change, then complain about the food!

Try him on a tin of dog food - he could have it cold or warm and with or without biscuits.

If I was you I'd tell him to start cooking the evening meal himself - the lazy sod !
    Love it

Make sure it is the Value stuff too:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
