Wonder if anyone could help?

I am with Scottish Power Online Energy Saver for gas and electric. Just had an email saying our monthly direct debit is going up from £76 to £98. There are only 2 of us in a one bed flat!

I went on a comparison site and it only came up with comparisons that would cost me more! I am going to ring up Scottish Power but what sort of deal should I be looking for?

You need to know your usage and prices that you currently pay , to be able to compare properly...

If your old DD of £76 was accurate then £98 does not look out of place as prices have just risen by lets say an average of 25%.
It also seems from your visit to comparison sites that your tariff is the cheapest on offer. What do the sites say your total yearly cost is (you did put in Kwh figures in not £'s) on present tariff with SP. Just divide that figure by 12 to see if it is somewhere near to £98.

Thanks for replies. I just rang them and they said I am not on their cheapest tariff. I need to be on Discounted Energy which should be 3% less but he said I need to give him an up to date reading, which I am going to do in a minute. I will also go have another look on the comparison site.

    My annual usage is

    Electricity - 3343
    Gas - 21420

By those figures your bang in the middle of the average user bracket

Get comparing , as they have all increased recently anyway

With those figures you are just about the average user, so I am afraid the figure of £98 is looking more realistic.
I am with npower and use 3400 electric and 17500 gas. My DD's are £84 combined so your extra gas use 4000 x 3p (typical) = £120 = £10 per month.

Thanks everyone. I have gone onto a couple of comparison sites and can't find any savings at all really, about £15 a year was the biggest saving. So am ringing Scottish Power back now as they said I can go onto their Discounted Energy Tariff which should be slightly better.

Not sure about anyone else, but that usage, especially gas, seems high. We are 2 persons in a 3 bed semi, gas CH with (old) combi boiler, cook - lots of batch cooking and make +-95% own bread - using gas, use a dishwasher and washing machine, but very strict with tumble drier ONLY in dire emergency. 2 freezers and 2 fridges.Home all day with disabled person who feels the cold - known to need heating on days I think of as sweltering - and our annual usage - weighted mean over 3 years is:
    Electricity - 4960kWh
    Gas - 7892kWh
is the gas reading off the meter, or converted to kWh?
Edit: just seen while I was replying others quicker - and better informed - have commented on usage.

I do think my gas is a little high though and so did the lady at Scottish Power. I have been changed to Discounted Energy, though my DD went up by a pound as it was not up to date with a meter reading.......but we had a good chat and she gave me the number for the Energy Efficiency Co, for some tips. I have had trouble with the timer on my gas boiler so have got into the bad habit of putting both heating and water on at the same time, even if I don't need both, so I know that is not going to help! I am really going to do my best to keep consumption down. Thanks for replies everyone.
