How to do free sports during winter?

Hello,

The pennies to pound threat reminded me of something. OH and I enjoy our sports. I go to the company gym and only pay 8 pounds a month for the machines, you have to pay for classes but I hate classes so it s ok. We both enjoy walking and try to do so on Sundays.

However, the problem lies with OH: he enjoys his cycling and goes on the weekend for a big ride. He used to do this after work during the summertime as well, but now that winter days end at 4pm, it is now very safe to cycle at night.

Now, the local sports centre does an all-including gym for 36 pounds a month. Ouch! even though he only joins for half a year, it is still 180 pounds. With that money, he could buy himself state of the art equipement for cycling (waterproof, hydrapack, leggings, etc). Swimming would be a cheaper option as going once a week would be 25 pounds for 10 sessions at 1.5 session a week: lets say about a 100 quid for half a year. Now the thing is he reckons swimming is not that enjoyable, specially at the local pool (lots of kiddies getting in the way, nothing against kiddies in particular but not possible to swim a straight line).

Can anyone think of some free sport that he could do during the winter?

Thx in advance.

Does he play football hockey or rugby? Could he join a local team where he could have fun and use it as part of his fitness regime?
  • Not free initially but how about rollerblading? OK you would have the get the rollerblades first but once you have them that's it!

It may be worth looking in the local paper for people selling some?
  • Do you have a garage or spare room? Get a turbo trainer off ebay then he can peddle away til his heart's content

  • ok thx for the suggestions but he cannot do sports outdoors when it is so dark that people cant see him. He is already biking outdoors at the weekend. Clubs are far from being free in our area since we live in Farnham (dont expect anything to be free). And no, we dont have space for a treadmill or anything like that.

Oh well, i guess we are gona have to dedicate one evening during the week to mutual motivation and do some sit-ups and free weight lifting. Boring but free...

    Thx for trying anyway!
