Can they do this? They insist I did a survey in the street (i never do!), they phoned up today and said they were checking the details were correct. They said they werent trying to sell me anything (yeah right) I asked for them to take my name off their list, they refused. When I said please wait a mo whilst i get a pen to write your number down they put the phone down. Did 1471 and found that it is the number of a timeshare company. By the way they are called GVC sales ltd. At least I have their address now, the woman was so pushy I dread to think how someone a little more vulnerable than myself would have been left feeling. I was a bit shook up having someone they knew stuff about me but saying they were keeping the info against my wishes.

I was under the impression that you could request your name to be taken off a list and the company must oblige. The problem is that mailing lists are bought on sold every day and sometimes they end up in the hands of less than reputable organisations. This is just a side effect of a modern electronic society ... you are no longer an individual, just some data amongst similar data for millions of other people.
You could try phoning the number and asking for the supervisor or report the number to the telephone watchdog.

Hi,
Is this not covered by the telephone preference service?

Have a look at http://www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk/
It may be that they're in breach of the data protection act.0 -
i usually tell companies that i am registered with TPC (which i am), they usually say sorry to bother you and they will remove from the list.
a little surprised that they refused to remove you from there list though....smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... :cool:0 -
I think you can ask for a copy of all information held on their system under the Data Protection Act, but I can't tell you the exact clauses to quote.0

I wish every person they called would do the same and argue with them on the phone, then we wouldn't have to put up with this crap. I do it, I hope all who read this will do it too.0

I had massive problems with npower getting off their mailing list. Months went by continually got there spam kept calling and speaking to managers and getting emails confirming it was done but the spam kept coming. Been npower spam free for about a month now so hopefully they finally fixed what they called a "bug" in their system. But only after me spending about 3 hours of my time on the phone (0800) to them and threatening reporting them.
The law should make it dead easy to get removed and then give big £5,000 per person fines to the companies that break the rules.Sense is not common.0
