What Is The Cheapest?

Options
hi all i have just move into a victorian maisonette with gas central heating, it has two bedrooms high ceilings and old sash windows to the upstairs it also has an old open fire since boarded over. i was going to see if a chimney sweep can get it working again but my question is what is the cheapest way to heat a home gas, electric, open fire or some other means. we all need to keep the cost down any ideas thanks

  • ok what sort of costs are we talking i am with n power duel fuel so if i had electric heaters around the house and an open fire in one room that would be more expensive than say central heating on all evening

    let me know your thoughts

    You can work out the cost of heat.

    Look at your electricity bill and see the cost of a kWh and that is what it costs to produce that amount of heat.(prices vary across the country)

    Look at the price of a kWh of gas and you then need to find out the efficiency of your boiler(on the SEDBUK site)

    You will normally find heat produced by gas cost between a third to a half of the cost of electricity.

    So post 2 gave the reply with one word - GAS.

    Lastly you can switch off/turn down radiators in the rooms you are not using!

    Although if the victorian maisonette includes basement rooms the OP should be trying to heat unused rooms to prevent damp , i wouldnt advise leaving basement rooms with no heat for months on end , regular ventilation and regular heat imo
